Liquid-crystal display (LCD) has become one of the leading types of displays. From TVs and computer monitors to tablet computers and even kids’ toys, countless display devices now use LCD technology. #1) It Doesn’t Use Backlights
Some people believe that LCDs don’t need backlights, but this isn’t necessarily true. The liquid crystals in an LCD are simply used to propogate the light with color, thereby creating the image. LCDs still need a backlight to create illumination, so manufacturers often light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for their devices’ backlight.
#2) Leaving an LCD Turned On Causes Screen Burn-In
It’s a common myth that if you leave an LCD turned on for a long period of time, the current screen will become burned into it. And when this happens, the image will remain even after you change the channel or otherwise change the image. While a common problem with cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays, LCDs don’t suffer from screen burn-in.
#3) It Consumes a Lot of Energy
Energy consumption specifications between display devices varies depending on a number of factors. Larger displays, for example, typically consume more energy than their smaller counterparts. However, LCD is one of the most efficient display technologies. It consumes less energy than CRT and even plasma, making it a popular choice for environmentally conscious consumers. And because LCDs are energy efficient, they can save consumers money on their monthly electric bills. This is just one more reason why consumers should consider LCDs instead of other types of displays.
#4) It’s New
LCD technology isn’t a new concept. While it seems like LCD TVs, computer monitors and other display devices have become increasingly popular in recent years, the technology has actually been around for many decades. Liquid crystals — the component on which the technology is based — were first identified in 1888. In the 1970s, companies began producing and selling LCDs. Since then, it’s become one of the leading technology standards for displays.
#5) Only Large LCDs Are Available
You’ll find LCDs available in a variety of sizes, including both small and large. That’s one of the great things about LCD technology: It can be used to create display devices of any size and any shape.
