5 Reasons to Choose an LCD Over a CRT

Jun 2, 2021

Liquid-crystal display (LCD) has become the world’s most popular display technology. Whether you’re shopping for a computer monitor, a tablet or any other display device, it will probably feature LCD technology. LCD, of course, hasn’t always been the predominant display technology. In the past, cathode-ray tube (CRT) held this title. LCDs, however, are better than CRTs for several reasons, some of which include the following.

#1) No Burn-In

You don’t have to worry about burn-in with LCDs. While CRTs are highly susceptible to burn-in, LCDs are immune to this phenomenon. Burn-in, of course, is a display problem that involves some or all of an image being permanently displayed. CRTs have phosphor compounds that make them susceptible to burn-in. Fortunately, LCDs don’t have phosphor compounds, so you don’t have to worry about burn-in with them.

#2) Energy Efficient

LCDs are more energy efficient than CRTs. Both types of displays will inevitably consume energy, but the former type will consume less energy than the latter type. Research, in fact, shows that LCDs are up to 30% more energy efficient than CRTs. And you can make your LCD even more energy efficient by adjusting its display settings. Lowering the brightness, for instance, will typically result in less energy being used.

#3) Weighs Less

Not only do they consume less energy than CRTs, but LCDs weigh less as well. If you’ve ever owned a CRT before, you may recall how heavy it was. CRTs manufactured in the past were exceptionally heavy, with some of them weighing 30 to 40 pounds. LCDs, though, feature a lightweight construction. They often weigh just a fraction of their CRT counterparts. With their lightweight construction, LCDs are a popular choice among consumers and businesses alike.

#4) Supports Small and Low-Profile Designs

Another reason LCDs are better than CRTs is because they support small and low-profile designs. CRTs are restricted to large and boxy designs. You won’t find any CRTs in a small or low-profile design. Rather, they are all large and boxy. LCDs offer a solution. They can be designed in small and low-profile shapes, making them ideal for monitors, tablet computers, smartphones, human machine interfaces (HMIs) and more.

#5) No Screen Flickering

Finally, LCDs don’t suffer from screen flickering. Screen flickering lives up to its namesake by “flickering” images on and off. It’s typically caused by a low refresh rate. CRTs have a lower refresh rate than LCDs, which can lead to screen flickering. If you’re worried about screen flickering, you should choose an LCD. No screen flickering is just one more reason why LCDs are better than CRTs.
