From TVs and computer monitors to smartphones, tablets and more, liquid-crystal display (LCD) is used to power countless display devices. Even if you own and use an LCD on a regular basis, though, you might be surprised to learn the following facts about these display devices.
#1) They Have Over 6 Million Pixels
To say LCDs have a lot of pixels would be an understatement. While the exact number varies, most LCDs are now made with over 6 million pixels, each of which is responsible for producing color that ultimately creates the displayed image.
#2) LED Displays Are Actually LCDs
You may discover display devices marketed and sold as light-emitting diode (LED). Based on the name alone, conventional wisdom should lead you to believe they are powered LED display technology. However, LED displays are actually LCD displays. They are only called LEDs because they use LEDs for backlighting.
#3) They Consume 25% Less Power Than CRTs
Statistics show a typical LCD consumed 25% less power than a cathode-ray tube (CRT) of the same size. And with a lower power consumption, LCDs naturally cost less to operate. Consumers may not notice a substantial difference in energy costs when using an LCD, but it’s certainly a noticeable amount of savings for businesses.
#4) They Don’t Suffer From Screen Burn
We’ve talked about this before on the Nelson Miller blog, but it’s worth mentioning again that LCDs don’t suffer from screen burn. Screen burn generally only with CRTs. When a CRT displays the same image for a prolonged period, the image may become “burned” into the display, resulting in screen burn. Thankfully, LCDs don’t suffer from screen burn because of their use of liquid pixels.
#5) Liquid Pixels Contain 3 Sub-Pixels
While LCDs contain over 6 million pixels, each of these pixels actually has three smaller sub-pixels. The sub-pixels used in LCDs include red, green and blue. Of course, the sub-pixels are responsible for colorizing the pixels and, therefore, producing the LCD’s image.
#6) They Aren’t Affected By Magnets
You don’t have to worry about magnets damaging your LCD. Like plasma displays, LCDs aren’t affected by magnetic fields. The same can’t be said for CRTs, which can suffer permanent damage when exposed to a magnetic field.
#7) Over 200 Million LCD TVs are Sold Annually
According to Statista, over 200 million LCD TVs are sold each year — and that’s just one type of LCD device. Others include tablets, smartphones, watches, alarm clocks, smart appliances, human machine interfaces (HMIs) and more.
