Microsoft Unveils Touchscreen-Controlled Surface Studio 2

Oct 9, 2018

It’s been nearly two years since Microsoft released the original, first-generation Surface Studio. Since then, the tech giant has been relatively quiet regarding a new model. But it appears that Microsoft is preparing to release a successor to the popular all-in-one PC. Earlier this month , Microsoft officially announced the Surface Studio 2, which like the first-generation model, will feature a touchscreen interface.

So, what is the Surface Studio exactly, and what do we know about the second-generation version that Microsoft is planning to release? Originally released Dec. 15, 2016, the Surface Studio is an all-in-one PC that comes with the Anniversary Update of Microsoft Windows 10 as the default operating system. It features a brilliant 28-inch 4.5K display pushing upwards of 4,500 by 3,000 pixels. The Surface Studio also features a fully functional touchscreen interface along with traditional peripherals like a wireless keyboard and mouse. And at just 12.5 millimeters thick, it’s said to be the thinnest all-in-one PC on the market — an impressive feat to say the least.

The Surface Studio isn’t cheap, however. With a starting retail price of $2,999, it’s one of the more expensive computers on the market. Because of this, Microsoft markets the Surface Studio to business owners and professionals rather than consumers. While consumer consumers purchase and use the Surface Studio, it’s mostly used by other companies in the workplace.

The upcoming Surface Studio 2 will feature the same all-in-one design as its predecessor. Of course, Microsoft has made several notable upgrades to its Surface Studio, beginning with new hardware. When announcing the next-generation Surface Studio, Microsoft revealed that it’s powered by an Intel Core-i& processor, a solid-state drive (SSD), and either 16GB or 32GB of DDR4 RAM.

The Surface Studio 2 will also feature a 28-inch touchscreen interface. And according to Microsoft, it will be 35% faster with 50% better graphics. “Fuel your creativity and bring your ideas to life on our most powerful Surface yet. Now 35 percent faster, with 50 percent more graphics performance and a stunning 28” PixelSense™ Display, the new Surface Studio 2 is the ultimate creative studio.”

Like the original Surface Studio, the next-generation model will be marketed to business owners and professionals. It’s expected to cost around $3,499, so it’s not exactly an inexpensive computer. Nonetheless, companies looking to invest in new IT equipment for their workforce should consider buying the Surface Studio 2. It’s a powerful all-in-one PC with a brilliant touchscreen display that’s easy and familiar to use.
