Samsung Launches New Folding Smartphone

Mar 5, 2020

Samsung’s folding smartphone is now a reality. Known as the Galaxy Z Flip, the South Korean tech company launched it in February 2020. Like many other smartphones on the market, it features a touchscreen display. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is unique, however, because of its ability to fold. You can bend and fold the touchscreen display without damaging it. To learn more about Samsung’s new folding smartphone, keep reading.

What Is the Galaxy Z Flip?

The Galaxy Z Flip is a new Android-powered smartphone developed by Samsung. The South Korean tech company originally unveiled it during the 2020 Academy Awards, during which millions of viewers saw the folding the smartphone in a television commercial. On Feb. 14, 2020, Samsung gave retailers the green light to begin selling the Galaxy Z Flip.

While the Galaxy Z Flip contains typical hardware and software specifications for a premium smartphone, it’s distinguished by its folding display. For the display — which is also the touchscreen interface — Samsung opted for a proprietary material that’s more elastic than traditional glass or plastic. Known as Infinity Flex Display, it’s essentially a hybrid material that contains glass as well as synthetic compounds. The combination of these materials allows the Galaxy Z Flip’s display to bend and fold without breaking.

How the Galaxy Z Flip Differs From Other Folding Smartphones

Of course, there are other folding smartphones on the market. What makes the Galaxy Z Flip different from these is its use of a non-plastic display. All other smartphones, as well as tablets and other mobile devices, with a folding display have relied exclusively on plastic. They use a plastic display that’s able to fold — to some degree — without breaking. The Galaxy Z Flip, on the other hand, uses a glass-based hybrid material.

Glass is typically preferable over plastic because of its increased strength and durability. Furthermore, glass-based displays, including that of the Galaxy Flip’s, don’t succumb to creases as much as plastic and plastic-based displays when folded.

Even with its folding display, the Galaxy Z Flip is still powered by capacitive touchscreen display. The Galaxy Z Flip’s folding, capacitive interface allows for a superior level of responsiveness and performance. It’s highly responsive at identifying and registering touch commands. But like all capacitive touchscreens, it won’t work with a stylus or gloved finger. You’ll have to control it using a bare finger.
