Self-capacitance is one of the world’s leading touchscreen technologies. Like all capacitive touchscreens, self-capacitance touchscreens measure an electrical charge to detect touch commands. Tapping the display interface will increase its electrical charge, which the self-capacitance touchscreen will register as a touch command. Given that there are several other touchscreen technologies available, though, you might be wondering why self-capacitance touchscreens are so popular. Longevity

Self-capacitance touchscreens typically last longer than many other types of touchscreens, including resistive touchscreens. This is because they don’t use moving or otherwise mechanical parts to detect input. Instead, self-capacitance touchscreens measure a uniform electrostatic field.

When turned on, they’ll project an electrostatic field across the display interface. When exposed to a conductive object — such as a human finger — the electrostatic field will increase. The self-capacitance touchscreen will then register this change in capacitance as a touch command. Since they don’t rely on moving or mechanical parts, self-capacitance touchscreens last longer than many other types of touchscreens.

High Resolution

Self-capacitance touchscreens are able to produce high-resolution images. Resolution is important because it affects the level of detail within a touchscreen’s images. Low-resolution images have fewer pixels and, therefore, a lower level of detail than their high-resolution counterparts. This isn’t a problem with self-capacitance touchscreens. All self-capacitance touchscreens are capable of producing high-resolution images with a high level of detail.

Accuracy

You can rest assured knowing that a self-capacitance touchscreen won’t trigger false touch commands. Some touchscreens are susceptible to false touch commands when exposed to various objects. If you place a resistive touchscreen in your pocket, for example, it may register a touch command simply from touching against the pocket’s interior lining.

Self-capacitance touchscreens are more accurate in this regard. They only respond to touch commands performed by a conductive object. You can control them with a bare finger, but you can’t control them with non-conductive objects. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about your self-capacitance touchscreen triggering false touch commands. Unless you touch it with a conductive object, it won’t register a touch command.

Sensitivity

Another benefit of self-capacitance touchscreens is sensitivity. They are extremely sensitive to touch commands. Self-capacitance touchscreens are designed with a grid of capacitance sensors. The columns and rows, however, operate independently of each other. As a result, self-capacitance touchscreens are more sensitive to touch commands than other types of touchscreens.
