Things to Consider When Choosing a Membrane Keypad for Outdoor Use

Rubber-Keypad-2Still searching for a new membrane keypad to use outside? Due to the increased humidity and fluctuating temperatures of outdoor environments, only some membrane keypads are suitable for such applications. So today were going to take a look at some of the things to consider when choosing a membrane keypad for outdoor use.

Water-Resistant

Arguably, one of the most important features to look for when choosing a membrane keypad for outdoor use is water-resistant. Even if the keypad is installed/used in a covered location, moisture vapor from the air will still get on the surface, and potentially even settle underneath the keys where it damages the electrical circuits. The good news is that most membrane keypads are naturally water-resistant, due in part to their design of being embedded into the circuity (unlike computer keyboards). With that said, you should still check to make sure the keypad is water-resistant before using it outdoors.

Durability

Of course, another feature to look for in an outdoor membrane keypad is durability. Keypads used outdoors tend to wear down faster than keypads used indoors. Therefore, it’s recommended that you choose a durable, well-made keypad that can withstand the wear and tear of the outdoors.

Back Lights

While back lights aren’t necessary in all types of membrane keypads, they may prove useful in the outdoors. If a worker intends to use the keypad during the evening or night hours and there’s not enough sunlight, he or she may not be bale to distinguish between the different buttons, resulting in reduced key typing accuracy. This problem is easily avoided, however, by using membrane keypads with integrated back lights. The presence of additional LED lights embedded into the back of the keypads helps to illuminate the keys so the operator can see them more easily. And because they use light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, back lights are energy-efficient and consume very little power.
