You’ve probably heard of light-emitting diode (LED) displays. In recent years, they’ve become one of the most popular types of electronic displays on the market. There are several different types of LED displays, however, one of which is micro. So, what is a micro LED display exactly, and how do they differ from traditional LED displays?
The Basics of Micro LED Displays
Also known as an mLED display, a micro LED display is a type of flat-panel electronic display that’s characterized by the use of super-small LED bulbs that form the pixels. In other words, each of the pixels in a micro LED display consists of an individual LED bulb. When the micro LED display is turned on, the respective pixels illuminate to produce visual images.
Micro LED Displays vs Traditional LED Displays: What’s the Difference?
Many people assume that micro LED displays are the same as traditional LED displays. While they both use LED technology, though, they work in completely different ways. Traditional LED displays are actually powered by liquid-crystal display (LCD) technology. They are simply called “LEDs” because they use LED bulbs for backlighting.
In comparison, micro LED displays don’t use LCD technology. Instead, they rely entirely on LED technology. They don’t contain liquid pixels, nor do they have a separate backlighting element. Instead, micro LED displays are powered entirely by LED technology.
Advantages of Micro LED Displays
Although they are relatively new — first appearing around the turn of the 21st century — micro LED displays have become increasingly popular. For starters, they offer faster response times than traditional LED and LCD displays. Response time, of course, refers to the time it takes a display to update its images. With faster response times, micro LED displays don’t suffer from the same lag as other display devices.
Micro LED displays also produce deeper contrast than other display devices. In other words, the difference between bright and dark images is stronger with micro LED technology.
It’s also worth noting that micro LED displays are energy efficient. They consume less energy than other display devices, making them a cost-effective solution for both consumers and business owners.
Finally, micro LED displays are naturally protected against screen burn-in. With other display devices, screen burn-in may occur if you leave a static image for an extended period. Thankfully, though, micro LED displays don’t suffer from screen burn-in. Even if the image never changes, the micro LED display shouldn’t experience screen burn-in.
