What Is a WLED LCD?

May 3, 2021

Liquid-crystal display (LCD) has become one of the world’s most popular display technologies. It’s used to power everything from televisions and computer monitors to smartphones, smartwatches and even human machine interfaces (HMIs). While all LCD devices feature liquid-state pixels, though, some of them use different backlighting than others. There are white light-emitting (WLED) WLED LCDs, for instance. WHat are WLED LCDs exactly, and how do they compare to other types of LCDs?

Basics of WLED LCDs

A WLED LCD is a special type of LCD that’s characterized by the use of white-colored light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs for the backlighting. With the exception of organic LCDs, all LCDs require backlighting. Backlighting is a lighting system that’s designed to illuminate the pixels. Most types of LCDs don’t feature self-illuminating pixels. Rather, their pixels must be illuminated by an external component. This component is known as the backlighting. WLED LCDs simply feature white-colored LEDs for their backlighting.

How WLED LCDs Work

Unless you’re familiar with the technology, you might be wondering how WLED LCDs work. Like all LCDs, they consist of many different layers. They have a pixel layer, for instance, that features the pixel pixels. They also have a diffuser layer and a backlighting layer. WLED LCDs simply feature white-colored LEDs in the pixel layer, which is placed behind the diffuser layer.

When you turn on an WLED LCD, the backlighting layer will illuminate the pixel layer to produce visible images on screen. With that said, the diffuser layer will control the level of brightness produced by the backlighting layer. WLED LCDs can automatically adjust their brightness level thanks to the presence of the diffuser layer. The diffuser layer can limit or even fully prevent light the amount of light that reaches the pixel layer.

Benefits of WLED LCDs

There are several benefits associated with WLED LCDs. They have a superior contrast ratio, for instance, when compared to other types of LCDs. Contrast ratio is the difference between the light and dark colors. With their white-colored LEDs, as well as a diffuser layer, WLED LCDs have a naturally high contrast ratio.

WLED LCDs are also energy efficient. All LCDs, in fact, are energy efficient, and those that use white-colored LEDs for the backlighting are no exception. They can last for over 60,000 hours. With their long lifespan while consuming a minimal amount of energy. As a result, WLED LCDs are a cost-effective choice for commercial display applications.
