Of all the different types of touchscreens on the market, few last as long as capacitive. If you’re tired of constantly repairing or replacing your business’s touchscreens, you may want to switch to capacitive. Capacitive touchscreens aren’t immune to failure. When compared to other touchscreens, though, they typically last longer. Therefore, you’ll get more use and value out of capacitive touchscreens. Why do capacitive touchscreens last longer than other types of touchscreens exactly?
Understanding the Basics of Capacitive Touchscreens
Capacitive touchscreens, of course, are touch-controlled devices that detect and respond to touch commands by measuring an electrostatic field. They produce a constant electrostatic field that’s projected across the display interface. Using an array of sensors, capacitive touchscreens measure the charge of this field.
Because of the human body’s conductive properties, touching or tapping the display interface with your bare finger will change the electrostatic field. Your finger will absorb some of the field’s charge, at which point the capacitive touchscreen will respond by registering a touch event in the appropriate area.
No Physical Force Required
One of the reasons capacitive touchscreens have a long lifespan is because they don’t require physical force. As previously mentioned, capacitive touchscreens work by measuring an electrostatic field with sensors. You don’t have to forcefully press or tap your finger against the display interface. To perform a touch command, all you have to place your finger directly over the display interface.
As long as your finger close to the display interface, it will draw some of the electrostatic field from the capacitive touchscreen to your body. This is in stark contrast to resistive touchscreens. Resistive touchscreens require the use of force. You’ll have to press or tap the display interface forcefully in order for a resistive touchscreen to recognize your touch command.
No Moving Parts
Another reason capacitive touchscreens last longer than other types of touchscreens is because they have no moving parts. They still feature several layers, and they still have a printed circuit board (PCB) or similar circuitry unit. Capacitive touchscreens, however, don’t have any moving parts.
Without any moving parts, capacitive touchscreens aren’t susceptible to premature wear and tear. They can withstand thousands of hours of usage while providing a positive and responsible experience. Resistive touchscreens, conversely, do feature moving parts. Each time you perform a touch command, some of the parts within a resistive touchscreen will move.
